Adding capacity in photovoltaic plants is a core part of the energy transition. Investment in PV plants therefore needs to be made as attractive as possible for operators. In order to make the planning, construction, and operation of PV systems more economical, the centralized string inverter concept was developed. This replaces a central inverter with multiple string inverters centralized in one place.

The string inverter concept

The string inverters are installed at a central location in the ground-mounted PV system, while the DC combiner boxes are distributed in the field near the panels. As a result, the lengths of the cables between the inverter and transformer are short, and there is minimal power loss on the AC side. The power loss can be reduced by up to 1.5% per km. This means that the high efficiencies of the inverters are fully exploited and unnecessary AC cables on the AC side are avoided. This also means that the defined power at the AC connection point is achieved. And due to the typical overcrowding of the PV generator compared to the inverters, the cable losses on the DC side are of little importance.

Standard options in stock and ready to order

We offer a wide range of solutions that are kept in stock and are available immediately for use in installation concepts for the PV module brands mentioned above. The DC combiner box is available in an IEC 61439-2-compliant design for DC system voltages up to 1,500 V with 20 to 30 A fuses, integrated surge protection, a flexible number of DC inputs, and optional string monitoring.

Optimized design

Through the use of advanced 3D simulation software, product variations have been designed and tested to ensure that our DC combiner box operates with maximum mechanical and thermal efficiency in the most compact package possible.

Surge protection

With different configurations of our high current combiner box, we offer the VPU surge protection series for 1500 V DC systems with up to 11 kA Isc and type I+II.

Special fuse protection

Weidmüller fuses (WSFL) and fuse holders (WSFH) have been specially developed for the new architecture of the high current combiner box. Rated currents of 35 to 75 amps per input enable the connection of single and double strings.
